Bullet tanker carrying liquid propylene overturns in Kochi, lifted

It was approximately 11.15 p.m. when the driver of the tanker lost control of the vehicle and it collided with a median while the driver was attempting to make a turn at Kalamassery during the accident.
Following an accident that occurred at TVS Junction at Kalamassery in Kochi, Kerala, on the night of Wednesday, November 20, 2024, a bullet tanker that was transporting 18 tons of liquid propylene, an industrial chemical, from BPCL-Kochi Oil Refinery to Gujarat was lifted and removed from the road. The accident occurred on Wednesday. After this, traffic was started back up again.
One of the drivers, who had incurred relatively minor injuries, was sent to a local hospital. Up until approximately five in the morning on Thursday, November 21, 2024, workers from the Fire and Rescue Services were actively engaged in the operation. They were assisted by the firefighting and technical team from BPCL. When the driver of the tanker was attempting to make the turn to Aluva at TVS Junction at approximately 11.15 p.m., the driver apparently lost control of the vehicle, causing it to collide with a median.
Minor leak detected
When the tanker overturned and hit the road, no leak appeared. After the tanker was crane-lifted, a small leak was found near the valve. Fire and Rescue Services officials stated the BPCL technical team instantly plugged it with a compound.
Plans to transfer the tanker’s contents to another were scrapped. Sources say the driver’s cabin was replaced and the load taken in the same tanker.
Firefighters cleared out an engine oil leak near the driver’s cabin.
The crash disrupted traffic. HMT Junction-bound vehicles to Aluva were rerouted through Cusat Junction.
Station officer Ranjith Kumar commanded the Eloor fire station team.
